EA888 Timing Chain — Malaysia Advice
The EA888 1.8T and 2.0 TFSI engines (used across most A3/A4/A5/Q3/Q5 and more) had well-documented timing chain tensioner issues on early Gen 1 and Gen 2 variants. The Gen 3 (post-2012) and Gen 3B (post-2015) revisions largely fixed the tensioner design. If your A6 has a pre-2012 EA888, a cold-start rattle lasting more than 2 seconds is a critical warning — stop using the engine until a VCDS check confirms chain health. At 4M Car Care we check camshaft correlation fault codes on every EA888 major service.
