Audi A8 Common Problems Malaysia — D4/D5
A8 D4 (2009–2017): air suspension compressor failure (most common, RM 3,000–8,000), 3.0T supercharger poly coupler, HPFP, carbon buildup (3.0T direct injection D5 only). D5 (2018+): 3.0T turbo EA839 + 48V mild hybrid — BSG belt and 48V battery failures. All A8: quattro Torsen diff fluid neglect. A8 is the most expensive Audi in Malaysia to maintain — budget RM 6,000–15,000/year for older D4.

A8 D5 — Air Suspension: The Main Cost Driver
The A8 D5 (2017+) has air suspension standard on all variants — it is not optional. This is the single biggest maintenance consideration for A8 ownership in Malaysia. The compressor runs every time the car needs to adjust ride height, and in Malaysia's heat and humidity, it works hard. Compressor lifespan: 100,000–130,000 km. Budget RM 3,500–6,500 for compressor, RM 2,500–4,000 for valve block, and RM 2,800–5,000 per air strut. Ride height sensors also fail — cheaper at RM 400–800 each but still need VCDS recalibration.
EA839 V6 Carbon & HPFP Follower
The A8 L 55 TFSI uses the EA839 3.0T V6 — same engine family as Q7 4M. Carbon buildup on intake valves at 50,000–70,000 km is standard for any direct-injection engine. HPFP cam follower: inspect at 60,000 km. The 48V BSG (belt-starter-generator) adds electrical complexity — any charging fault or weak AGM battery confuses the BSG management. Always code a new AGM battery via VCDS immediately after replacement.
