Innova Alternator — Heavy Electrical Load
Innova carries 7 passengers with multiple USB chargers, entertainment screens and A/C at maximum — all drawing from the alternator. Signs of alternator failure: battery warning light on dashboard, dimming headlights and dashboard, A/C performance degradation (compressor drawing max current). Alternator failure leads to dead battery within 30–60 minutes. Diagnosis: voltmeter test (should show 13.5–14.5V with engine running). Replacement: RM 600–1,200 at our Bandar Sri Damansara workshop.
Alternator Diagnosis — Toyota Malaysia
A failing alternator is often misdiagnosed as a battery problem — always test both together. A healthy alternator outputs 13.8–14.5V at the battery terminals with the engine running. Toyota alternators typically last 120,000–160,000 km. Common failure causes in Malaysia: heat damage to the voltage regulator, corroded connectors from humidity, worn brushes. For hybrid models (Prius/Sienta), the MG2 motor-generator replaces the alternator — diagnosis requires specialist equipment. Budget RM 500–1,200 for alternator replacement.
