Brake fluid absorbs moisture from the air (hygroscopic) and Malaysia's humidity accelerates this. As water content rises, the boiling point drops — during hard braking, boiling fluid causes vapour lock and brake fade. The Passat uses DOT 4 or DOT 4 LV fluid and it should be changed every 2 years regardless of mileage. At 4M Car Care we use a digital brake fluid moisture tester at every major service — if water content exceeds 3%, a flush is recommended immediately.
