Toyota Fortuner Shock Absorber Guide — City vs Off-Road
Fortuner factory shocks are firm off-road biased. City daily drivers may upgrade to comfort-oriented shocks at 80,000 km. Off-roaders keep OEM. Cost guide.

Fortuner Shock Absorbers — Rear Leaf Spring vs Front Struts
Fortuner AN160 front: independent double-wishbone with coil spring + shock absorber; rear: leaf spring with shock absorber. Front shocks last 80,000–100,000 km. Rear shocks (separate from leaf springs) last 60,000–80,000 km — rear shocks take the heaviest load during fully-loaded driving. Signs: excessive rear body bounce, front dive under braking, visible oil streak on shock body. Replace in pairs. Front: KYB Gas-a-Just or Bilstein B4. Rear: Monroe OE Spectrum.
Shock Absorber Life in Malaysia
Malaysia's potholes and speed bumps reduce shock absorber life to 60,000–80,000 km (vs 80,000–100,000 km in smoother countries). Signs of worn shocks: excessive body bounce after speed bumps, body roll in corners, uneven tyre wear, longer braking distances. Replace in axle pairs. Toyota OEM shocks are available at TSCs; KYB Excel-G or Bilstein are popular independent alternatives. For Hilux/Fortuner, heavy-duty shocks (RM 300–600 each) are recommended for vehicles regularly carrying loads.
