Yaris 12V Battery — Hybrid Has Two Batteries
All Yaris models (petrol and hybrid) have a standard 12V starting battery: NS40 or 55B24L. In the Yaris Hybrid, this 12V battery is kept charged by the hybrid system (not an alternator) — but it still ages and loses capacity. If the 12V battery dies, the hybrid system cannot start (the hybrid power control unit draws from the 12V battery to power up before the high-voltage circuit comes online). Replace the 12V battery every 4 years regardless of perceived condition. Cost: RM 180–280.
Car Battery Advice for Malaysia Heat
Malaysia's heat reduces battery life to 2–3 years (vs 4–5 years in temperate climates). Toyota models use 55–80 Ah batteries depending on variant — Alphard/Vellfire and hybrid models require AGM or EFB batteries. Popular brands in Malaysia: Amaron, Bodin (Century), Varta. Budget RM 200–450 for standard batteries; RM 400–700 for AGM. For Prius/Sienta/Altis hybrid, the 12V auxiliary battery (not the hybrid pack) still needs replacement every 2–3 years.
