Audi A5 Common Problems Malaysia — 8T/B9
A5 8T (2008–2016) with DQ200 dry S-tronic: low-speed judder and mechatronic failure are the top complaints. B9 A5 (2017+) with DQ381 wet S-tronic: far more reliable. Both generations: EA888 carbon buildup on intake valves at 60,000–80,000 km, HPFP failure (cold start stutter), oil consumption from worn piston rings. Cabriolet: soft-top drain tubes block — water in footwell.

A5 B9 — HPFP Cam Follower & Carbon
The A5 B9 Sportback 45 TFSI (EA888 Gen 3, DKZB) shares all the same failure modes as the A4 B9 it's built on. The high-pressure fuel pump (HPFP) cam follower is the #1 watchpoint: the follower sits between the pump and the camshaft lobe — it wears progressively, especially if oil changes are skipped. Inspect at 60,000 km; replace if wear exceeds 0.5 mm. Ignoring it destroys the follower completely, scoring the camshaft lobe and turning a RM 300 part into a RM 4,000+ repair. Always inspect follower before condemning the HPFP.
DQ381 Fluid Neglect & Carbon Buildup
The DQ381 7-speed S-tronic is a wet-clutch gearbox — far more forgiving than the DQ200 dry clutch, but NOT lifetime fluid. Neglected fluid turns dark and acidic, causing rough shifts and premature mechatronic wear. Change every 40,000 km. Carbon buildup on intake valves is inevitable with direct injection — walnut blast at 60,000–80,000 km. City driving in Malaysia accelerates both issues. Combine both services at 60,000 km for best value.
