Audi A5 Timing Chain Malaysia
A5 8T 2.0 TFSI (pre-2012 EA888 Gen 1): timing chain tensioner failure known — cold start rattle is the warning. Gen 2/3 EA888 (post-2012): chain improved significantly. S5 3.0T supercharged: timing chain low risk with clean oil. Change oil every 10,000 km with correct spec oil — the single biggest factor in chain life.

A5 Timing Chain
- EA888 Gen 3 (B9 2017+): LOW RISK — improved chain tensioner and design vs Gen 2
- Listen for cold-start rattle — if present, VCDS timing chain stretch codes confirm
- Chain replacement (if needed): RM 2,800–4,500
EA888 Timing Chain — Malaysia Advice
The EA888 1.8T and 2.0 TFSI engines (used across most A3/A4/A5/Q3/Q5 and more) had well-documented timing chain tensioner issues on early Gen 1 and Gen 2 variants. The Gen 3 (post-2012) and Gen 3B (post-2015) revisions largely fixed the tensioner design. If your A5 has a pre-2012 EA888, a cold-start rattle lasting more than 2 seconds is a critical warning — stop using the engine until a VCDS check confirms chain health. At 4M Car Care we check camshaft correlation fault codes on every EA888 major service.
